The technical definition for matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. In 3rd grade (and maybe before that) you were introduced to states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. So think about the world around you. Everything on earth is either a solid (like rocks, furniture, and walls), a liquid (like water), or a gas (like air). So everything you can see and touch, and even some stuff you can't, is matter.
